Donald Squibb Sutphin
Donald Squibb Sutphin was an American expatriate Figurative Expressionist.
Born on December 11, 1926 in Boston, Massachusetts, Sutphin grew up in West Hartford, Connecticut. His earliest recollections of art were from age eight, when he was regularly reprimanded for drawing in his schoolbooks. Considered a poor student, at 13 Donald was sent to a strict military school with no art classes. He drew on his own.
At 17, Sutphin joined the US Navy and served in the Mediterranean fleet from 1945-46. Although he developed an affection for the region, he returned to finish high school in New England. At 22, Donald married and used the G.I. Bill to attend the Boston Museum School where he concentrated on printmaking.
In 1954, Sutphin enrolled at the Art Students League of New York to work with George Grosz and received the renowned artist’s encouragement.
Sutphin moved his family to Florence, Italy in 1955. After a year, his wife and two children went home; he stayed and later remarried. In 2014 Donald said: “I am still here finding Europe very conducive to working out my own thoughts. Life in Florence has given me time to think and feel out what I am.” Sutphin continued to live in Florence until his death, March 2, 2015.
In Florence, Sutphin taught numerous private students woodcut and etching. He was considered a kind of godfather for the younger set of Americans in Florence.
Sutphin’s one-man shows include Bonfoey Gallery in Tucson, Arizona, Kunsthandel Liernur, The Hague, Netherlands, Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia and the Halle Gallery, Munich, Germany.
